Food policy in World War One

Following Professor Alun Howkin’s splendid lecture on Rural Life and Food Policy in WW1 last month, we would highly recommend his book: The Death of Rural England: A Social History of the Countryside since 1900 (Routledge 2003).

It’s full of fascinating case studies from around the country and documents the profound changes in rural living and working from the turn of the century.  We also filmed his lecture and will be posting the video on this site in the next few weeks.

However, if you want a quick summary of WW1 Food Policy and agriculture, we’ve just discovered ‘The Few That Fed THe Many’.  This handy commemorative brochure has been produced by the National Farmers’ Union in time for the WW1 Centenary and can be downloaded here.
