History of the Vale

Plum picking in Evesham Vale, 1937

Although it’s a bit late for our period of research, here’s a charming newsreel film from the British Pathe archive showing people picking the plum harvest during the summer of 1937.

The film shows various shots of the men, women and children in plum orchard picking plums. It’s interesting to note that the voiceover states that “most of the people picking plums are Gipsies”, a tradition long-held in the county.

By the end of the film, you can see the all of the harvested plums in long lines of wooden boxes and small baskets ready to be sent for market.
